Ate His Fish and His Words

     Moses Carlton, a wealthy shipping magnate from Wiscasset, Maine, threw his gold ring into the Sheepscot River and boasted, "There is as much chance of me dying a poor man as there is of ever finding that ring again." A few days later, Carlton found the ring in a fish served to him at a restaurant. Bad luck has followed the Hope Diamond ever since a jeweler bought it from India to France in the 17th century.The jeweler was killed by a pack of mad dogs. In 1793,owners Louis the sixteenth,and Marie Antoinette were beheaded.After American socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean bought the diamond in 1911, her son was killed in a car accident,her daughter died of an overdose, and her husband died in a mental hospital. Today the blue 45.52carat Hope Diamond is in Smithsonian which, so far at least remains intact.

While on a ship at sea ,the three-year-old Marquise de Maintenon was pronounced dead and sewn up in a sack to be thrown overboard. Luckily,her pet kitten had crawled inside the sack and began meowing during the funeral service. The mourners stopped the service,opened the sack. They discovered that the little girl was breathing. She later became the second wife of Louis the fourteenth,and lived to the age of 84.
